Research

The research programme conducted by the Centre for Asian Studies focuses on the global “Re-Orient-ation” that has characterized international relations in the last two decades. In fact, the Asian continent has been (re)gaining a central role in economic and financial exchanges as well as a significant political weight in many international fora, while China and India tend to be considered as path setters by the developing world and beyond.

Analysing the unfolding of this process in its different dimensions, the CAS research programme aims at investigating how Asian states both respond to and shape the economic, political and social changes that their societies have been experiencing in the current context of globalization.

It concentrates on Asia’s four major emerging countries: China, India, Indonesia and Vietnam, and on four main areas:

  • Past, present and future outlooks of Asian development regimes
  • Social policies and protection
  • Agricultural development and food security
  • International migrations in/from Asia
