Biography:

Dr. Robert Muggah is presently a Fellow at the Instituto de Relações Internacionais, Pontifícia Universidade Católica do Rio de Janeiro. There he directs several projects on humanitarian action in non-war settings, civilian rosters for peace support operations, and violence prevention and reduction with support from Canada, the UK and IDRC. Dr. Muggah also coordinates the research project "States of Fragility" and "Urban Resilience in Situations of Chronic Violence" housed at the CCDP and sponsored in part by the Folke Bernadotte Academy. Previously, he was Research Director of the Small Arms Survey and lectured at the Graduate Institute of International Studies.

Dr. Muggah was the Global Security and Cooperation Professional Fellow (SSRC) at Queen Elizabeth House, University of Oxford. He received his DPhil at Oxford University and his MPhil at the Institute for Development Studies, University of Sussex. He is also an Associate of the Households in Conflict Network (UK), the Conflict Analysis Resource Centre (Colombia) and a Principal of The SecDev Group (Canada). In addition to serving as an adviser to the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), he has worked with multilateral and bilateral agencies in twenty countries including Congo, Ethiopia, Haiti, Lebanon, Nepal, Philippines, Papua New Guinea Russia, Sri Lanka, Sudan and Timor-Leste.

His work is published in peer-reviewed and policy-relevant journals,
academic volumes and the international media. Most recently, he is the co-editor of the Global Burden of Armed Violence (Cambridge: Cambridge University Press, 2011), an editor and author of Security and Post-Conflict Reconstruction: Dealing with Fighters in the Aftermath of War (New York: Routledge, 2009), Relocation Failures in Sri Lanka: A Short History of Internal Displacement (London: Zed Books, 2008), and No Refuge: The Crisis of Refugee Militarization in Africa (London: Zed Books 2006). He has also contributed more then twelve chapters to the Small Arms Survey (Cambridge: Cambridge University Press) since 2001 and other edited volumes.

Dr. Muggah edits the Journal of Stability and has published articles in International Peacekeeping, Security Dialogue, Contemporary Security Policy, The Commonwealth Journal of International Affairs, The Journal of Refugee Studies, The Journal of Disasters, Forced Migration Review, and others. In addition to publishing widely in the
international media in several languages, Dr. Muggah has also been involved in co-writing and advising documentary films on violence, drug policy and development.
