Biography:

Oliver Jütersonke has a doctorate from the Graduate Institute of International and Development Studies, a Diplôme d’Etudes Superieures (DES) from the Graduate Institute of International Studies, and a Bachelor of Arts in Economics and Politics with First Class Honours from the University of Exeter. Before becoming Head of Research for the Centre on Conflict, Development and Peacebuilding (CCDP) in 2008, he worked for six years at the Programme for Strategic and International Security Studies (PSIS). Oliver teaches Epistemology and Methods (E150) for the Graduate Institute's MIA programme, as well as graduate-level seminars and diplomatic training sessions on peacebuilding, urban violence and the responsibility to protect. Since 2007, he has also been a post-doctoral research fellow at the Zurich University Centre for Ethics (ZUCE). 

   
Field(s)of Interest:
  • Changing notions of sovereignty in international law and politics, with an emphasis on the notion of “conditional sovereignty” inherent in the contemporary discourse of a “responsibility to protect (R2P)”.
  • Peacebuilding and the security-development nexus, with a particular focus on stabilization agendas, state-building, and institutional design.
  • The social and spatial dynamics of urbanization and their impact on humanitarian and development practices;
  • The history of the field of International Relations, and its relation to the social sciences, law and philosophy.
