| Dr. Ernesto Zedillo gave the inaugural lecture of a new series of public lectures aimed primarily at stimulating the debate on emerging trade-related policy issues among decision-makers in Geneva. The lectures are part of a broader initiative established by the Centre for Trade and Economic Integration (CTEI) of the Graduate Institute of International and Development Studies. The initiative, entitled Thinking Ahead on International Trade (TAIT), will focus on the medium-run challenges facing the global trade system in general, and the WTO’s role in particular. It is a four-year interdisciplinary research that will bring together diplomats, scholars and businessmen. |

| Dr. Zedillo highlighted in his speech the danger of rising protectionism and pledged for an effective mechanism to discourage countries from embarking on trade protectionism. He asserts that “The only thing that will make leaders think twice about whether or not to fall into the temptation of pleasing a particular constituency with protectionism will be the possibility that, as a consequence of such an action, another of its political constituencies will end up being seriously hurt.” Therefore, leaders who firmly believe in the destructiveness of protectionism, additionally to agreeing mutually with other leaders to restrain from such measures, "should firmly declare that any new action restricting access of his country’s exports to any foreign market shall lead to retaliation against the export sectors of the trade transgressor." |
