The 2011 Pierre du Bois Annual Lecture, organized by the Graduate Institute in partnership with the Fondation Pierre du Bois, was given by The subject of this year’s Pierre du Bois Annual Lecture organized by the Graduate Institute in partnership with the Fondation Pierre du Bois pour l’histoire du temps présent was the Holocaust. It was delivered by renowned historian Saul Friedlander. A world famous historian and Holocaust survivor, Saul Friedlander has devoted much of his career to studying the terrible crimes committed during the Holocaust. This work takes on renewed importance today as a generation of witnesses is slowly disappearing. He has made great contributions to scholarly studies on Nazi Germany and World War II. Saul Friedlander is currently Professor of History at the University of California, Los Angeles. An alumnus of the Graduate Institute, Friedlander obtained his PhD from the Graduate Institute in 1963. He then stayed on in a teaching capacity until 1988. He has been honoured with a number of awards, including the Pulitzer Prize in 2008, for his work The Years of Extermination: Nazi Germany and the Jews, 1939–1945. This year’s conference on “Terrorism and International Politics: Past, Present and Future” was the third one in a series organised by the Graduate Institute of International and Development Studies and the Fondation Pierre du Bois pour l’histoire du temps present. The conference assembled an interesting group of young scholars and more seasoned academics. It assessed the phenomenon of terrorism from a historical perspective. On September 16, the Pierre du Bois Prize was awarded to Dr. Dominic Eggel for his thesis entitled “The Idea of Europe in Classical Weimar: The Case of Goethe, Schiller, Herder and Wieland” in the field of current history presented in the department of International History at the Graduate Institute of International and Development Studies for the academic year of 2010-2011.
