Senior fellow Maria (Marily) Mexi specializes in future labour markets and social policy. She earned a Doctorate in Politics and International Relations and an MPhil in Political Theory from the University of Oxford, as well as an MSc in European Social Policy with Distinction from the London School of Economics and a BA in History with High Distinction from the American College of Greece–Deree College. She also completed post-doctoral research at the University of Geneva's Department of Politics and International Relations. She teaches a postgraduate MINT course on global inequalities at the Geneva Graduate Institute, and besides the Albert Hirschman Centre on Democracy, she is affiliated and works as an international expert with the International Labour Organization, the United Nations Research Institute for Social Development in Geneva, the TASC – Thinking Ahead on Societal Change Platform, and the Delphi Economic Forum in Greece, where she is the director of the Centre for the Future of Work. She also serves as special advisor to the President of Greece on issues of digital economy, employment and social welfare.
She has extensive experience leading large-scale EU (e.g. H2020, FP7) and Swiss-funded international research projects. She was the University of Geneva’s Scientific Co-Coordinator of the Swiss Network for International Studies-funded projects Gig economy and its implications for social dialogue and Social and solidarity economy, urban communities, and the protection of vulnerable groups. She is a contributing author to Social Europe on issues of the platform economy and the transformation of work, and co-editor of the book Social Dialogue in the Gig Economy: A Comparative Empirical Analysis (forthcoming from Edward Elgar).
She has worked as an expert for the European Commission and a government advisor in several countries (Croatia, Georgia, Romania, Moldova, Ukraine, Serbia, and the Caribbean Community). She has advised the Ukrainian Labour Ministry on the development of the country's first-ever tax and social benefit microsimulation model, as well as the Romanian Labour Ministry on the design of the country's first generation of active labor market policies following the country's EU accession. Her most recent research contributions to the ILO Policy brief on Social dialogue in the post-covid era were featured in a joint ILO/OECD report on employment and incomes, which was acknowledged in the G20 Riyadh Summit Leaders Declaration. Currently, she advises and collaborates with major international organizations such as the World Economic Forum on issues of sustainable trade and labour, as well as permanent missions and country delegations to the United Nations, and employers' and workers' organizations.
