Our Programmes in a Nutshell

Professor Andrea Bianchi, Director of Studies at the Graduate Institute, discusses what makes the Institute so unique and shares his thoughts on academic excellence.

Are you passionate about working in the public or private sector, or even a non-profit organisation?

Our mission is to prepare you for an international career in the field of your choosing by offering rigorous, yet stimulating courses taught by an outstanding faculty of prominent scholars and practitioners of global affairs. Set in the heart of International Geneva, our dynamic and cosmopolitan learning environment makes the Graduate Institute the ideal place to begin your international path.

Our degrees

The Graduate Institute offers seven Master of Arts programmes. These two-year, individualised and flexible curricula take advantage of resources from across the Institute.

  • The two interdisciplinary master programmes (Master in International Affairs, Master in Development Studies) provide you with an in-depth academic background and hands-on experience in the professional field of your choice.
  • Our five disciplinary master programmes (Master in Anthropology and Sociology, Master in International Economics, Master in International History and Politics, Master in International Law, Master in International Relations/Political Science) give you a solid foundation on which you can deepen your existing knowledge but also gain new expertise.

The six PhD programmes offered by the Institute are much more than writing a thesis in four years. They were designed to develop your intellectual curiosity, analytical skills and critical thinking in a well-structured curriculum that enables original research in six disciplines: anthropology and sociology, economics of development, international economics, international history, international law, international relations/political science.

A fast-track option gives students the opportunity to complete a master and PhD programme in five years instead of six.

The LL.M. in International Law is a one-year postgraduate degree course that provides advanced, comprehensive and practical training in international law. You could also opt for specialised joint degrees with the University of Geneva:

We have also partnered with internationally renowned institutions from across the globe to offer partner programmes at the master’s level.

Online and Non-degree Programmes

As part of our mission to expand our network of academic partnerships, we offer a number of exchange programmes  with prestigious institutions all over the world. The exchanges have allowed our students to discover other cultures and learning methods. As we have hosted many incoming exchange students from partner institutions, those students have also had the chance to explore the diversity and opportunities afforded by our own Institute.

In addition, we offer two summer programmes (International Affairs, United Nations and Global Challenges) in which students can get a taste of the Institute’s world renowned faculty in a dynamic setting that includes conferences, workshops and discussions with experts, as well as visits to international organisations.

A 14-week undergraduate programme offers students a unique opportunity to familiarise themselves with international institutions and actors that tackle global challenges.

We also have two massive online open courses, or MOOCS, which are free online courses provided through the FutureLearn platform. These courses (on Globalisation and Global Governance) combine video lectures, articles, discussions and interactive assignments.
