Project Description
The Everyday Peace Indicators (EPI) project focuses on documenting how local communities define and experience peace in their own terms. To date, it has gathered more than 30,000 indicators from across the world, creating a unique dataset that reflects people’s everyday realities of peace rather than external expert definitions.
This project will make these indicators accessible through a dynamic web platform and a series of public exhibitions. The platform, developed with the Zurich-based data visualization firm Interactive Things, will allow users to explore and compare indicators by geography, gender, and other factors. It will also connect the data to multimedia content, including interviews, photographs, and videos from EPI fieldwork, bringing community perspectives directly into global debates on peace. The platform will serve both as a public resource and as a tool for academic research, enabling comparative analyses across contexts such as the US, Afghanistan, Sri Lanka, and Colombia.
Alongside the digital platform, the project will host interactive exhibitions in Switzerland during major international events, including Geneva Peace Week and UN open days. Using digital maps and audiovisual material, the exhibitions will allow visitors to engage with local perspectives on peace and contribute their own indicators through participatory features. These exhibitions will reach peace practitioners, policymakers, and the wider public, creating immersive spaces for dialogue and reflection. By making community-generated indicators visible to international audiences, the project bridges the gap between abstract policy discussions of peace and the everyday experiences of people in conflict-affected settings. In doing so, it aims to foster empathy, broaden understanding, and support more inclusive approaches to peacebuilding practice and research.
