With a global society no longer set within rigid national, political, economic and social boundaries, it will surely be the most fateful century in human history. From 2002 to 2004, Mr Sharma served as the Special Representative of the United Nations Secretary-General to Timor Leste, with the rank of Under Secretary-General.
From 1988 to 1990, Mr Sharma served as India's Ambassador and Permanent Representative to the United Nations in Geneva, where he acted as the spokesperson for developing countries in the UN Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) during the Uruguay Round of multilateral trade talks.
In the late 1990s, he was closely engaged in the process which led to the formulation and adoption of the Millennium Development Goals. Mr Sharma's special interests lie in the empowerment of young people, the advancement of women's rights, the challenge of poverty eradication and economic growth.
