Twelve students, including visiting post-docs, PhD candidates, and students in the MA and LLM programs in international law and interdisciplinary studies, will share insights on various topics related to the law of the sea, fostering a dynamic exchange of ideas and critical discussions.
The Duty of Due Regard in the EEZ: Role and Challenges
The Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) is a marine space where the legitimate interests of coastal and other states coexist within a delicate system of coordination and balance, and where conflicts of use can easily arise. In this presentation, Carlos will provide an overview of the duty of due regard, one of the rules under the law of the sea aimed at accommodating competing interests in the ocean. The discussion will examine the legal nature of the duty of due regard, its variable scope and content, and its practical implications in contemporary contexts of competing uses.
