Afghanistan provides an object lesson on how the actions of international stakeholders have had lasting consequences for the well-being of ordinary people.
This hybrid, online and in-person roundtable, features panellists with years of engagement in Afghanistan and the subject of sanctions. They will explore the current economic and social situation and the impact of policies imposed by external actors including restrictions on the functioning of the economy, forced refugee returns and sanctions as well as the seizure of the country’s sovereign external reserves. Such economic warfare and the policies and practices that accompany it, within and beyond Afghanistan, has led to unprecedented levels of poverty and deprivation. Combined with restrictive Taliban policies on women and girls this has contributed to further marginalisation and destitution of vulnerable Afghans.
As the situation in Afghanistan is routinely crowded out by media coverage on other pressing crises, this is an opportunity to discuss contemporary realities and join the discussion in a Q & A moderated session.
