This workshop will provide practical guidance on the Swiss work permit process for hiring third-country nationals who are graduates of the Geneva Graduate Institute. It is designed for employers who would like to better understand the conditions, procedures and key points to consider when preparing a work authorisation request.
The session will be led by Fiorella Fernandez Deshogues, a legal specialist in Swiss migration law.
What the workshop will cover
The workshop will introduce the main principles of Swiss migration law and explain how they apply when an employer wishes to hire a non-EU/EFTA graduate in Switzerland.
Topics will include:
- The main Swiss legal frameworks governing residence and work permits
- The specific situation of non-EU/EFTA graduates from the Geneva Graduate Institute
- Conditions to be met when applying for a work authorisation
- The importance of preparing a complete and well-documented application file
- The transition from studies or traineeships to employment
- Young professional / trainee agreements and possible work permit pathways afterwards
- Facilitated access to the Swiss labour market for graduates
- Exceptions to the order of priority
- Areas where there may be a recognised shortage of specialist labour
- Geneva-specific practice, including the role of OCIRT
- Specific considerations for NGOs and small or medium-sized enterprises

Speaker
Fiorella Fernandez Deshogues is a legal advisor. She specializes in migration, employment, and social security law. She graduated from the University of Lausanne (Master of Law) and has more than 10 years of professional experience.
Thanks to her extensive experience in the immigration department of a large fiduciary company, in a specialized law firm, and in several associations for the defense of the rights of foreigners in different cantons, she has acquired specialized knowledge in various aspects of immigration law. She founded Swiss Immigration in 2020 to advise:
- Companies on the work permit procedure for non-EU/EFTA citizens and the secondment of foreign staff to Switzerland;
- Individuals: non-EU/EFTA citizens who have graduated from a Swiss university, among others;
- Understanding the unemployment benefit system for non-EU/EFTA PhDs and Post-PhDs.
Fiorella is passionate about her work. She has a migration background (from Peru to France and Switzerland) and is sensitive to social issues.
