CIES and the International History and Politics Department are delighted to invite you to a talk given by Professor Antoine Acker, Postdoctoral Fellow Nathalia Capellini Carvalho De Oliveira and PhD Candidate Lukas Christoph Becker entitled "From extraction to emissions: how to write the history of fossil fuels in the Anthropocene" on Wednesday 6 April, from 17:00 to 18:00.

When fossils became fuels, the path toward the current crisis of climate change was set. Their use as an energy source, however, was neither inevitable nor predetermined but rather the result of complex historical processes and decisions. To truly understand the all-encompassing position they have come to take in modern societies, we must try to understand their entire lifecycle from extraction to emission and how these processes engendered dynamics of dependency and domination on our way into the Anthropocene.

By approaching this topic from a perspective of the Global South, we want to highlight the global and interconnected character of this phenomenon as well as the importance of historical dynamics for our current situation and our future still unknown. With this, we not only seek to further our understanding of the climate change problem but also to provide a space for history as a discipline within these discussions.

The event will be taking place in hybrid mode. You can join us in P1-745 or via Webex.

The event will be followed by an aperitif of Brazilian snacks served in the 7th floor kitchen, immediately next to the room where the event will be taking place.
