In this event, we explore the unprecedented changes to work as we know it over the last two years, and their implications for young people today and in the future. In a lively and interactive format, we will exchange insights between students, young professionals and established experts on three themes – and share their aspirations for the future of work. Discussions will aim to highlight missing links and challenge established discourse on youth and the future of work. Could fresh thinking contribute to realizing alternative futures at local and global levels?

AGENDA

Welcome and Fireside Chat | 9:00 – 10:00

Panel 1   |   10:30 – 12:00 CET

The Climate Crisis and Systemic Disruption
The climate crisis, and our efforts to mitigate and adapt to its impacts, will disrupt and transform jobs and labour markets around the world. How will the systemic disruptions of the climate crisis impact the future of work? What will be the consequences of large-scale migration and restructuring of infrastructure as part of climate adaptation responses? How will we respond to demands of young people and workers for more environmentally and socially conscious employers? Can we imagine a more ecological, fair and democratic future of work?

Moderator: Dario De Quarti, Master Candidate in International Economics, Geneva Graduate Institute

Speakers:

  • Jamilah Bahay, 2021 G20 Youth Delegate, Sustainable Finance Policy Lead / Leader of Tomorrow, St. Gallen Symposium, Geneva Graduate Institute
  • Sarah Gondy, Technical Specialist, Just Transition, International Labour Organization
  • Cynthia Illi, Co-president, Jeunes Vert-e-s Vaud; Swiss Delegate to the European Green Party

Panel 2   |   13:00 – 14:30 CET

The Great Setback and New Pathways to Development
Labour market inequalities are widening within and between countries, accelerated by uneven distribution of the benefits of technology and trade, and the impacts of Covid-19. Can the lessons we have learnt through the pandemic highlight new avenues for progress for both individuals and economies? Can we identify new pathways to connect to formal employment, international labour markets and the positive opportunities of trade and technology? What avenues can we pursue towards a more connected, equitable and global future of work?

Moderator: AnaMaria Meshkurti, WEF Global Shaper; Head of Marketing, Communications and Engagement, Fongit

Speakers:

  • Sabina Dewan, President and Executive Director, JustJobs Network

  • Nazrene Mannie, Executive Director, GAN Global
  • Federico Perez, Founder & CEO, Platinum Capital; Member of ITC's Ye! Community
  • Federica Saliola, Lead Economist, Social Protection and Jobs Global Practice, World Bank

Panel 3   |   15:00 – 16:30 CET

The Great Resignation, Inclusion and Purpose
The Covid-19 pandemic has spurred a large-scale resignation of workers across countries and industries. Early analysis points towards an aspirational workforce seeking to maintain the benefits of flexible work, work-life balance, and more rewarding opportunities. But are these opportunities available to all segments of the workforce? Are companies and jobs really changing enough to meet the rising expectations of a new generation of workers? How radically do we need to realign our systems, cultures, and operating models to ensure an inclusive, meaningful and human future of work?

Moderator: Kyle de Klerk, Master Candidate in International Affairs, Geneva Graduate Institute

Speakers:

  • Gib Bulloch, Founder, Craigberoch Business Decelerator
  • Liana Melchenko, Global Head of Innovation and Insights, The Innovation Foundation
  • Shunta Takino, Policy Analyst, Directorate of Employment, Labour and Social Affairs, OECD
  • Allyson Zimmermann, Executive Director, Europe, Middle East and Africa, Catalyst

ABOUT THE FUTURE OF WORK SUMMIT 2022

The Covid-19 pandemic has demonstrated the impact of radical disruption and the potential for radical reform to the world of work. The insights gained from this unique time are critical - not only for workers, employers, and labour directorates - but for the international community at large.

Shifts in how, where, when and if we can work have had significant implications for individual wellbeing, business and economic models, trade and international development, and even nature and the climate. But how has this changed our vision of the future?

In this third edition of the Future of Work Summit, we are convening diverse voices and expertise from International Geneva and beyond to explore unusual connections and missing links in the current discourse on the Future of Work.

Gathering in-person and online, we will exchange insights from cutting-edge research and action, spark new relationships, inspire new ideas, and discover common ground for collaboration on future challenges.

The Summit will span three days, as follows:

26 April - DAY 1: Thinking Ahead with International Geneva

Multi-stakeholder roundtables (by invitation only) | 9:00 – 16:30 CET

Moderated discussions bringing together leading experts, practitioners, and policymakers, in and around Geneva, who are contributing to envisioning and shaping the future of work.

High Level Session | 17:00 – 19:00 CET
We invite leaders of international organizations, business, government, and academia to share forward-looking perspectives on the future of work from diverse vantage points.

Reception | 19:00 CET
Hosted by the International Chamber of Commerce (ICC), with a welcome address from John Denton, ICC Secretary-General.

27 April - DAY 2: Youth Thinking Ahead | 9:00 – 18:30 CET

We hand the controls to ‘Youth Thinking Ahead’, our community of students and young professionals. They will host an inter-generational dialogue challenging our thinking, pushing the boundaries of new ideas, and discussing the implications for young people today and in the future.

28 April - DAY 3:  Alternative Futures (by invitation only) | 9:00 – 11:00 CET

We reconvene our Youth Thinking Ahead team to consolidate their insights over the course of the Summit, highlight new thinking and explore avenues towards alternative futures. This hands-on workshop will shape the first “Alternative Futures” publication – reviewing and advancing foresight on the Future of Work.
