The rise of the populist Right is often described as a backlash against neoliberalism. This talk, based on Quinn Slobodian’s latest book “Hayek’s Bastards: The Neoliberal Roots of the Populist Right” argues that it was more of a frontlash: it shows how many of the core thinkers of the recent Far Right from Charles Murray to Javier Milei emerged from within the neoliberal movement itself and the populist Right seeks to deepen many of the social Darwinist dynamics of capitalist competition.
Quinn Slobodian is Professor of International History at Boston University and the author and editor of seven books translated into ten languages. He contributes regularly to the New York Times, Guardian, and New York Review of Books. In 2024, Prospect UK named him one of the World’s 25 Top Thinkers.
This event will be introduced and moderated by Marie Laure Salles, Director of the Geneva Graduate Institute, and followed by questions and answers.
