The Ciné-Club Technologies and the Future of Our Societies concludes its autumn programme with I'm Your Man (2021), Maria Schrader’s witty and thought-provoking exploration of artificial intelligence, love and human relationships.
About the film
Alma is a scientist working at the Pergamon Museum in Berlin. To secure funding for her research, she agrees to participate in an unusual study: for three weeks, she must live with Tom, a humanoid robot whose artificial intelligence has been designed with one purpose: to make her happy.
Handsome, charming and attentive, Tom has been programmed to be Alma’s ideal partner. Initially deeply sceptical, Alma soon finds herself confronting unexpected questions about intimacy, desire and what it means to connect with another being.
Adapted from a short story by Emma Braslavsky, Maria Schrader's I'm Your Man uses humour and sharp dialogue to explore our capacity to form emotional bonds with machines. Through Alma and Tom's relationship, the film raises broader questions about artificial intelligence, human imperfection and whether happiness itself could ever be engineered.
Premiered at the 2021 Berlin International Film Festival, the film earned Maren Eggert the Silver Bear for Best Leading Performance.

Student-led discussion
Following the screening, the audience is invited to take part in a discussion prepared and led by students from the Geneva Graduate Institute and the University of Geneva (UNIGE).
The conversation will provide an opportunity to explore the questions raised by the film around artificial intelligence, human-machine relationships, emotional attachment and the role technology might play in some of the most intimate aspects of our lives.
