UCLA historian Saul Friedlander, a child Holocaust survivor, was awarded a 2008 Pulitzer Prize for his definitive account of "The Years of Extermination: Nazi Germany and the Jews, 1939-1945."
In 1948, Friedlander immigrated to Israel, studied and later taught in Tel Aviv. In 1963, he received his PhD from the Graduate Institute of International and Development Studies in Geneva, where he taught until 1988.
Friedländer taught at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem and at Tel Aviv University. In the 1960s, he wrote biographies of Kurt Gerstein and Pope Pius XII.
Since 1988 he has been Professor of History at the University of California, Los Angeles. In 1987 he joined the UCLA faculty as holder of the 1939 Club Chair in Holocaust Studies.

The subject of this year’s Pierre du Bois Annual Lecture organised by the Graduate Institute in partnership with the Fondation Pierre du Bois pour l’histoire du temps présent was the Holocaust. It was delivered by renowned historian Saul Friedlander. A world famous historian and Holocaust survivor, Saul Friedlander has devoted much of his career to studying the terrible crimes committed during the Holocaust. This work takes on renewed importance today as a generation of witnesses is slowly disappearing. He has made great contributions to scholarly studies on Nazi Germany and World War II. Saul Friedlander is currently Professor of History at the University of California, Los Angeles. An alumnus of the Graduate Institute, Friedlander obtained his PhD from the Graduate Institute in 1963. He then stayed on in a teaching capacity until 1988. He has been honoured with a number of awards, including the Pulitzer Prize in 2008, for his work The Years of Extermination: Nazi Germany and the Jews, 1939–1945.
