Almost four million people remain internally displaced in Ukraine as a result of the full-scale Russian invasion in 2022 and ongoing aggression since then, as well as the occupation of Crimea and parts of eastern Ukraine since 2014. Besides ongoing displacement due to hostilities, people are being evacuated from the most heavily affected frontline regions, and continue to depart from occupied territories to the government-controlled areas of Ukraine.

Drawing on his extensive journalistic experience in Ukraine, including in frontline regions, Artem Perfilov will outline the challenges facing internally displaced people and host communities in Ukraine, and how these have been addressed since 2014 with the help of national and international donors. He will highlight the challenges people face during evacuation from the frontline or movement from occupied to Ukrainian-controlled territories, and address why people return to frontline regions or are reluctant to leave. Throughout, he will shed light on the crucial role of journalists, local producers and other media actors in this context.
