About the speaker 
 

Emanuel Schäublin is an anthropologist and conflict researcher, currently serving as Deputy Head of the Mediation and Peace Section at the Center for Security Studies at ETH Zurich. Dr. Schäublin holds an MA in Arabic and Philosophy from the University of Geneva and a DPhil in Anthropology from the University of Oxford. From 2006 to 2010, Emanuel worked here at the CCDP conducting research on Islamic charities in the West Bank and Gaza in the context of the War on Terror, resulting in CCDP Working Papers published in English and Arabic. His research has since expanded to explore ethics, mutual aid, surveillance, repression, Islam, non-state governance in armed conflicts, and ethnographic methods.

He is the author of Divine Money: Zakat, Islam, and Giving in Palestine (Indiana University Press), which was a winner of the Clifford Geertz Prize with Honorable mention. In addition to his academic work, Emanuel is a screenwriter and executive producer, contributing to projects such as Désordres, a film about anarchist watchmakers in 19th-century Switzerland.
