In the melody of movements and memories,
there’s a symphony of silence
In the movement of melodies and memories,
there’s stillness & serendipities
In the memory of movements and melodies,
there’s synchronicity & shores
to walk around to
Space holds movement.
Time holds memory.
What melody
has swayed you to the roots of your land?
What memory
has evoked you to rush to the warmth of your heart?
What movement
has held you to stay still?

Can Code be the Culture to drive on the chariots of climate?

“How do migrants negotiate cultural identity through music and media within globalized environments?”

The artistic inquiry emerged in light of Tuvalu’s recent announcement to become the world’s first "digital nation," a responsive move to the existential threat posed by climate change. As Tuvalu prepares for a future where its citizens may be forced into displacement, the platformization of culture becomes a pressing terrain through which identity, memory, and belonging are renegotiated—particularly when the homeland remains both present and inaccessible. Migrants, similarly, suspended in uncertain geographies, navigate their connection to culture through digital media, music, and shared sonic memories, even when physical return remains unlikely or undesired.

In this context, music consumption is not simply entertainment; it becomes a means through which migrants construct emotional and cultural bridges to both their homelands and their new environments. Global media platforms such as YouTube, Spotify, and Instagram function as everyday tools for diasporic identity-making, enabling the circulation of hybrid cultural forms and shaping processes of belonging, nostalgia, and adaptation.

The following questions were developed to explore this intersection of media, migration, and musical identity:

  • How do global media platforms and digital technologies (e.g., YouTube, Spotify, Instagram, QQ music,) facilitate access to music and influence its consumption among migrants?
  • In what ways does this media consumption shape the acculturation process and cultural identity formation of migrants in their host societies?

This exhibition is part of academic research where the artist, Abhinay Renny has come up with different media works contemplating on the intersection of media, migration and musical identity.
