event summary

In association with UMAM Documentation and Research (UMAM D&R) and the Geneva Graduate Institute, the first MENA Prison Forum Film Series announces its premiere screening of the documentary film Ghost Hunting.

The selected film explores the effects of torture and imprisonment on the individual, the forms of inmate resistance to their captors, and the post-imprisonment process of healing through creative artistic expression. Directed by Raed Andoni, himself a former prisoner, the film brings together a group of Palestinians formerly detained in the al-Moskobiyya interrogation center to confront their carceral experiences together as a group. With the director, they created a replica of the detainment facility and reenacted interrogations drawing upon their repressed memories and emotions.

The prison as an institutional concept has held a central position within countries across the MENA region and most notably in Israel, where detention and imprisonment have been core features of its ongoing occupation of Palestine. This MENA Prison Forum Film Series includes nine hybrid film events to be held this year across the MENA region and in Switzerland.

This MENA Prison Forum event is in partnership with the 17th edition of the International Oriental Film Festival of Geneva (FIFOG), taking place from 13-19 June.

Speakers

The film screening will be followed by a three-person roundtable featuring the film’s director, Raed Andoni, in conversation with producer Nicolas Wadimoff (Akka Films), moderated by Professor Riccardo Bocco (IHEID/CCDP).  The roundtable discussion will explore relevant themes raised by the film relating to carcerality and the individual, properly placed within the larger political context of militarized Israeli occupation and systemic human rights violations in the occupied Palestinian territories today.
