The IHEID Law of the Sea and Ocean Governance Seminar presents Autumn Semester 2025

Presentations will illuminate contemporary issues in ocean management and reflect the diverse perspectives that the program encourages. Participants will not only engage with significant academic literature but also benefit from the vibrant discourse fostered by their peers, enhancing their understanding of this essential field. Twelve students, including visiting post-docs, PhD candidates, and students in the MA and LLM programs in international law and interdisciplinary studies, will share insights on various topics related to the law of the sea, fostering a dynamic exchange of ideas and critical discussions.

Migration, Enforced Disappearances, and the Protection Gap under International Law in the Central Mediterranean

This presentation will focus on enforced disappearances of migrants in the Mediterranean Sea as the result of a systemic cycle of abuse fueled by the intersection of state and non-state actors’ complicity, structural failures in migration governance, and the prioritization of deterrence over human rights.

With Sofia Carolina Diaz (IHEID), 2nd-year Master's of Arts Candidate at the Geneva Graduate Institute (IHEID) in the interdisciplinary international and development studies program (MINT) with a specialization in Migration, Mobilities, and Boundaries.
