All too often, aspirations for peace, justice, and reconciliation are unevenly balanced with political priorities. Nearly two decades ago, pioneering African Union peacemaking activities in Sudan and South Sudan set the bar for "African solutions to African problems." Today, the move from hard-won consensus to durable peace has proven catastrophic, with both countries in turmoil.
With his latest book, The Sudans: Africa's Search for Peace, Democracy, and Two Viable States (Cornell University Press), Prof. Alex de Waal and co-author Willow Berridge document the remarkable process of consultations, mediation, and consensus-building in one of the thorniest episodes in the countries' shared history. The Sudans tells the story of the African Union’s efforts to make peace in the Sudans between 2009 and 2013. It details the work of the AU High-Level Panel to resolve the war in Darfur, promote democracy in Sudan, and steer the independence of South Sudan. Led by former South African President Thabo Mbeki, the AUHIP’s measures comprised Africa’s most ambitious peace-making effort.
Interpeace and the Geneva Graduate Institute invite you to the book launch of Prof. de Waal’s latest book, ‘The Sudans: Africa's Search for Peace, Democracy, and Two Viable States’, followed by a discussion on ‘Peace in Sudan: An Impossible Dream? Reflections on the experience of African peacemaking.’
