JUNE 2025 World Banks's Global Economic Prospects (GEP)
Presentation on Foreign Direct Investments Trends
Join us for a presentation by the World Bank Deputy Chief Economist and Director of the Prospects Group, Ayhan Kose, on the June 2025 GEP’s chapter titled: “Foreign Direct Investment in Retreat: Policies to Turn the Tide”.
Excerpt: FDI inflows to emerging market and developing economies (EMDEs) have declined sharply, falling to around 2% of GDP—less than half their 2008 peak. This retreat reflects rising trade tensions, policy uncertainty, and geopolitical risks, alongside a drop in investment treaties and increasing regulatory restrictions. The report calls for a three-pronged strategy to reverse the trend: improving institutional quality, promoting macroeconomic stability, and fostering global cooperation to sustain FDI benefits and support development goals
