This sessions privileges question of attunement, sensory, and affective engagement, modes of address, and circulation; divided into three parts.

Flotsam & Jetsam is the concluding conference of the SNSF-funded project Images, (In)visibilities, and Work on Appearances (ImageApp). It centers the work of visual artists, filmmakers, and photographers engaged with port cities in eastern Indonesia, especially Banda and Ternate. From spices to nickel, colonial maps to contemporary activism, the event explores how places marked by extraction and violence speak through image, material, and movement.

10:00 – 12:30: GESTURES OF CARE (part of  "Fire Play: Understanding and Documenting Indigenous Fire Governance in Indonesia") by Aryo Danusiri.  
Duration: 65 mins.

Film screenings and discussion with Aryo Danusiri on environmental crises in Indonesia, moderated by Lee Douglas. 

14:00 – 16:00: Encountering Histories
Presentations by Nancy Jouwe (Mapping Slavery), Wim Manuhutu (colonial maps of Banda), Tintin Wulia (Thingstigate), and reflections on artist-led initiatives in Ternate and Banda, followed by a roundtable discussion.

16:30 - 18:00: Dance as evidence: On origin, belonging , and ownership (2024), by Tintin Wullia
