The Ciné-Club Technologies and the Future of Our Societies continues its 2026–2027 season with Sorry We Missed You (2019), Ken Loach’s powerful exploration of precarious work, the gig economy and the impact of technology-driven working practices on everyday life.
About the film
Following the 2008 financial crisis, Ricky Turner is struggling to get back on his feet. Hoping to improve his family’s situation and eventually buy a home, he takes a job as a self-employed delivery driver. But his new work leaves him subject to the relentless demands of an online retail platform.
Meanwhile, his wife Abby, a care worker, faces similarly long and demanding hours. As work increasingly dictates the rhythm of their lives, the couple finds themselves with less and less time for their children, putting growing pressure on the entire family.
Through the story of the Turner family, Sorry We Missed You examines the human consequences of changing models of work and the technologies and platforms that increasingly organise them, raising questions about precarity, autonomy and the promises of the digital economy.

Student-led discussion
Following the screening, the audience is invited to take part in a discussion prepared and led by students from the Geneva Graduate Institute and the University of Geneva (UNIGE).
The conversation will provide an opportunity to reflect on the issues raised by the film, from platform work and digitalisation to changing employment relationships and their broader social consequences.
