Streetwise brings together select Indonesian and Swiss artists for a series of outdoor events that visualize and publicize key historical and environmental injustices in Indonesia but also in Switzerland. Part of the SNSF project “Imaging Invisibilities: Publicizing Historical and Environmental Injustice for Sociopolitical Change,” the program builds on findings from ethnographic research, archival study, and close collaboration with artists and activists in eastern Indonesia—from the bustling port city of Makassar to Maluku--the original “spice islands” where Europeans vied for control of the islands’ famed nutmeg and cloves, and currently experiencing far-reaching environmental destruction due to nickel extraction--to the contested western half of Papua Island claimed by Indonesia. Through close collaboration between Indonesian and Swiss artists/activists the events targeting the streets and key locations in Geneva also aim to showcase the creative forms, attention-grabbing strategies, and experimental approach to public space used to expose injustices that conventionally have been marginalized and remained unseen. Streetwise designates not only the privileged location of our events therefore but also the smarts and creativity of the artists and activists whose work will be performed and on display in Geneva in early June 2026.
