In partnership with the State of Geneva, HES-SO Genève, the University of Geneva, and the Pôle de Création Numérique, this unique ciné-club explores the impact of technology on our societies, examining future perspectives while taking today’s reality as a starting point.
For this edition, we will be screening eXistenZ (1999), David Cronenberg’s visionary sci-fi thriller exploring the blurred boundaries between virtual worlds and reality.
Set in a near future, the film follows Allegra Geller, a brilliant game designer who has created a revolutionary interactive game connected directly to the human nervous system. After an assassination attempt during the launch of her invention, she is forced to flee with Ted Pikul, a young marketing trainee. Together, they embark on a disorienting journey where the line between reality and simulation becomes increasingly uncertain.
Released before the rise of immersive digital platforms and contemporary debates on virtual identity, eXistenZ remains a striking meditation on technology, embodiment, and the psychological effects of living through artificial systems.
Following the screening, the audience will be invited to take part in a discussion with professor Anna Leander on the technological and societal questions raised by the film.
25 free tickets are available for students of the Institute.
