As part of its UN Economist Network (UNEN) book talk series, the UNEN Working Group on Human-Centred Economics and Sustainable Development invites you to a conversation on The Diane Elson Reader: Gender, Development and Macroeconomic Policy, an open-access volume bringing together more than three decades of influential scholarship by Diane Elson. The discussion will explore how feminist economic thinking has reshaped debates on macroeconomic policy, development, and social justice—and why these perspectives remain central to advancing more human-centred economic policymaking today.

The Diane Elson Reader: Gender, Development and Macroeconomic Policy brings together a curated selection of Professor Elson’s most influential writings from the past 35 years, alongside a new introductory essay. Spanning macroeconomic policy, public finance, labour markets, care economies, and global development, the book traces how feminist economics has challenged mainstream assumptions about growth, efficiency, and value—offering both a retrospective on the field’s evolution and a forward-looking framework for more inclusive and accountable economic policy.

The book is available open access, and participants are encouraged to consult selected chapters in advance.
