Join us for a public briefing on the evolving landscape of peace diplomacy and the strategic pathways for its renewal. Drawing on the first year of the Nagulendran Chair in Peace Mediation, this session offers an initial stock-taking of research on the sector’s current pressures, funding landscape, and institutional architectures. The discussion reframes the field under the broader concept of “peace diplomacy” — rather than the narrower label of “peace mediation” — in order to encompass the full spectrum of conflict management, transformation, and resolution practices — especially those that are frequently not part of the public imagination. This approach seeks to reposition mediation as a distinct and meaningful activity within a revitalised framework of diplomacy, while emphasising the complementary roles of states, NGOs, community actors, and the private sector in sustaining peace efforts.
Achim Wennmann is Professor of Practice in the Institute’s Interdisciplinary Programme where he holds the Nagulendran Chair on Peace Mediation. He is also the Director for Strategic Partnerships of the Geneva Graduate Institute.
