La Suisse est membre à part entière de l'ONU depuis 2002. Depuis janvier 2023, elle siège en tant que membre élu, pour deux ans, au Conseil de sécurité de l'ONU, l'organe de gouvernance le plus puissant pour la paix et la sécurité dans le monde. En tant que pays neutre avec une longue tradition de promotion de la paix, la Suisse a rejoint le Conseil, qu'elle va présider pour une deuxième fois en octobre prochain, à une époque extrêmement difficile. Quelles expériences la Suisse acquiert-elle au sein de cet organe ? Où et comment peut-elle faire la différence ? Cheffe de la mission suisse à l'ONU, à New York, l'ambassadrice Pascale Baeriswyl, partagera les expériences faites au cours de ce mandat et parlera des défis et des opportunités pour la Suisse au sein du Conseil de sécurité.

A world in crisis: what can Switzerland contribute to the UN Security Council?

Switzerland has been a full member of the UN since 2002. Since January 2023, it is also seating, for a two-year term, as an elected member, on the UN Security Council, the most powerful governing body for peace and security in the world. As a neutral country with a long tradition of peace-building, Switzerland joined the Council, which it will be chairing for a second time next October, at an extremely difficult time. What experience is it acquiring within this body? Where and how can it make a difference? Head of the Swiss Mission to the UN in New York, Ambassador Pascale Baeriswyl, will share her experiences during this mandate and talk about the challenges and opportunities for Switzerland within the Security Council.

Pascale Baeriswyl a grandi à Bâle. Elle a étudié à Bâle, Genève et Paris, obtenant des diplômes en droit, en histoire, en littérature française et en linguistique. Elle a travaillé comme chercheuse et a été juge au tribunal civil de Bâle. Elle a rejoint le service diplomatique en 2000, où elle a notamment travaillé à l'ambassade à Hanoi et dans les missions suisses auprès de l'UE à Bruxelles et auprès de l'ONU à New York.

En 2016, le Conseil fédéral l'a nommée secrétaire d'État du Département fédéral des affaires étrangères, la première femme à diriger le service diplomatique suisse. Depuis juin 2020, elle est la représentante permanente de la Suisse auprès des Nations Unies à New York. En mai 2023, l'ambassadrice Pascale Baeriswyl a présidé le Conseil de sécurité de l'ONU.

Ambassador Pascale Baeriswyl

Pascale Baeriswyl grew up in Basel. She studied in Basel, Geneva and Paris, graduating in law, history, French literature and linguistics. She worked as a researcher and served as a judge at the Basel Civil Court. She joined the diplomatic service in 2000, where she worked in particular at the Embassy in Hanoi and on the Swiss missions to the EU in Brussels and to the UN in New York.

In 2016, the Federal Council appointed her State Secretary of the Federal Department of Foreign Affairs, the first woman ever to head the Swiss diplomatic service. She has been Switzerland's Permanent Representative to the United Nations in New York since June 2020. In May 2023, Ambassador Pascale Baeriswyl chaired the UN Security Council.
