“When Mining and Agribusiness Cause Hunger: Can the UN Protect Rural Communities Against Globalised Companies?”

Date: Friday, 17 October
Time: 16:30–18:00
Venue: Room A2
Partner: Action de Carême

In many parts of the Global South, extractive industries and industrial agribusiness are threatening the right to food. Communities face land grabs, environmental destruction, and the loss of livelihoods. As the UN moves toward a binding Treaty on business and human rights, this round table brings together voices from Africa, civil society, diplomacy, and academia to discuss two central questions:

  • Could the UN Treaty on Business and Human Rights help hold transnational corporations accountable?
  • How does the UN Declaration on the Rights of Peasants (UNDROP) strengthen this effort?

Speakers:

  • Maxine Bezuidenhout – Alternative Information & Development Centre, Cape Town
  • Representative from the Rural Women’s Assembly – (Speaker to be confirmed)
  • Terence Tshisevhe – South African Permanent Mission to the United Nations Office, Geneva
  • Representative of the UN Working Group on UNDROP
  • Ulises Quero – International Service for Human Rights, Geneva

Moderator:

  • François Mercier, Action de Carême
