Starting fresh in a new country isn't always easy. Between academic demands and the challenge of building a social network from scratch, it's natural to feel overwhelmed. But as Johan’s experience reflects, sometimes the best way to support your own wellbeing is to create spaces where others can thrive too.
His story shows that with a bit of creativity and a sense for community, there are meaningful ways to connect people, enjoy precious moments together, and foster wellbeing — often around something as simple and universal as a good meal.
When Johan arrived in Geneva, he recognised a common struggle: balancing demanding studies with the need for routine and social connection. Rather than seeing this as a solitary challenge, he took action to build the kind of supportive environment he - and others - needed.
"Moving to Geneva was my fourth time in a new country," Johan explains. "I knew if I was finding it challenging to meet new friends and build routines, others must feel the same. Creating a supportive social network became very important to me. There's no right or wrong way to do this, but I'm sharing what's helped me find balance — maybe it can inspire you too."
