Gabriela Álvarez Ávila began her career with ICSID 2000, rising quickly to Senior Counsel and serving as Tribunal Secretary in numerous proceedings. Her early years exposed her to some of the most delicate dynamics between states and global investors, and her sharp analytical approach quickly became evident.
In 2007, she transitioned into private practice with Curtis, Mallet‑Prevost, Colt & Mosle, becoming a partner the following year. Her work took her across sectors such as infrastructure, energy, telecommunications, banking, and oil & gas, and across legal regimes, representing states, investors, and state‑owned enterprises in high‑stakes arbitration.
Her reputation for precision, discipline, and strategic clarity earned her a place on the ICSID Panel of Arbitrators in 2017, and later appointments to the ICC Court of Arbitration for Mexico in 2021 and a second term in 2024.
By 2021, she joined DLA Piper as partner and co‑leader of the Latin America Arbitration Practice Group. Her peers and clients consistently described her as “phenomenal,” “meticulous,” and “one of the most experienced arbitration lawyers in Latin America.”
Fluent in English, Spanish, and French, she navigates cross‑border disputes with the ease of someone perfectly at home in the multilingual, multi‑jurisdictional world of global arbitration.
