It is the beginning of a new academic year; students are settling into Geneva, beginning their classes and the Institute is starting its autumn schedule of events. With the start of the semester, the Institute also welcomes its newest group of Global South Scholars-in-Residence, promising academics selected and funded to come to the Institute from developing countries. These scholars come to Geneva to benefit from the expertise of the Graduate Institute’s faculty and resources which help them further their research and update their teaching curricula with a view to strengthening their home institutions. They enrich the Institute by sharing their expertise and experience with its students and professors.

This semester’s Global South Scholars-in-Residence are Charlotte Karungi Mafumbo from the University of Cape Town (South Africa), Olajumoke Yacob-Haliso from Babcock University (Nigeria), and Olayinka Idowu Kareem of Obafemi Awolowo University (Nigeria).

Charlotte Karungi Mafumbo's research focuses on terrorism and its impact on development in Uganda. She gives lectures on history, peace and conflict studies.
         
Olajumoke Yacob-Haliso's research and publications have centred on refugee women, post-conflict reintegration of refugees, Liberia, and foreign policy issues. Olajumoke will be conducting research in Geneva on the politics of refugee protection, especially with reference to the work of the UNHCR in Africa.

Olayinka Idowu Kareem specialises in international trade, trade policies and development. Prior to his present appointment as a lecturer in economics, he was a consultant at the World Bank’s, Nigeria office.

“My participation in the programme exposes me to new knowledge and the latest analytical tools in empirical research in my field. I am excited to be able to benefit from the pool of renowned scholars at the Institute”, said Olayinka Idowu Kareem. “The school’s location in Geneva and proximity to all the major international organisations is ideal for my research.”

Since its beginnings in 2010, 15 Global South Scholars have come to the Institute.

The Institute is accepting applications for the Global South Scholars-in-Residence programme for the spring 2013 semester until October 1st.
