Graduate Institute Welcomes Inaugural Cohort of the new LL.M in International Law

The first class of the new LL.M. in International Law arrived at the Institute on 12 September for a series of welcome and orientation events that culminated with a cocktail reception at the historic Parc des Bastions in Geneva.  Participants in the new cohort come from 5 continents, from 17 different countries and collectively speak 22 different languages.

The Programme comprises both compulsory and elective classes, including general and specialty international law courses.  “Not only does this provide students with a firm basis in public international law, but it also permits them to engage with the areas of international law that interest them most,” remarked Programme Manager Jason Rudall.  “In addition to their international law courses, students also have the opportunity to discuss legal problems in tutorials, develop their professional skills in practical workshops and write an LL.M. paper on a topic within their specialty stream.”  LL.M. participants will also undertake real legal work for a client as part of a law clinic, and gain exposure to leading practitioners through the intensive courses and guest lectures.

The LL.M. is a “tech-smart” programme, where all participants are issued Samsung tablets, which not only supports their academic course work but also increases opportunities for online collaboration and stronger communication between participants throughout their experience.  The customised course Moodle includes all academic resources, discussion boards and a variety of media to support the learning process.
Based at the Villa Barton campus of the Graduate Institute, the dedicated home of Executive Education, the cohort has a retreat-style environment for learning with access to the new facilities of the Institute.
