World-renowned Professor Philippe Sands Q.C. has given a two-day intensive class on ‘The International Court of Justice: Process and Prospects’ for the LL.M. in International Law at the Graduate Institute, Geneva.
Prof. Sands treated the LL.M. class to privileged insights into the United Nations’ principal judicial organ, focusing on the role of lawyers, judges and the registry, as well as highlighting some of the contemporary challenges faced by the Court. As it approaches the centenary of its predecessor, the Permanent Court of International Justice, Prof. Sands considered the prospects for the Court in a world now populated by a varied and growing range of international dispute settlement fora.
Prof. Sands is Professor of Law and Director of the Centre on International Courts and Tribunals at University College London as a practicing barrister for Matrix Chambers. As a practitioner he has extensive experience before many international courts and arbitral tribunals, including the International Court of Justice.
The LL.M. class have engaged with a variety of high-profile professors and practitioners, and look forward to their next intensive course, with former judge of the International Court of Justice, Professor Bruno Simma.
