The partnership brings together two institutions with complementary perspectives on global issues. The FGV School of International Relations in São Paulo is a top academic institution invested in the training of International Relations professionals and, additionally, is considered to be the top think tank in Latin America. Dedicated to preparing its students for the professional world, FGV São Paulo uses “active teaching methods through which students learn to solve complex problems through the intensive use of technological tools and qualitative and quantitative methods”.
São Paulo is a major hub for economic, financial, and international affairs.
The new exchange agreement is open to both master’s and doctoral students at both institutions and would allow two Geneva Graduate Institute students to go to São Paulo and two students from the FGV São Paulo School of International Relations to come to Geneva.
The new BA-MA agreement will allow participating students from the FGV São Paulo School of International Relations to spend their first three years of their bachelor’s degree in São Paulo, before coming to the Geneva Graduate Institute for their fourth and fifth years of study. During their fourth year, they would simultaneously complete their bachelor’s degree and begin their master’s degree at the Institute, completing the degree in their fifth year. In order to partake in the programme, students must be nominated by FGV São Paulo and then apply to the Geneva Graduate Institute. They may apply to any of the Institute’s Master programmes. In any given academic year, up to five FGV São Paulo students may be admitted into the BA/MA programme.

The Geneva Graduate Institute and FGV São Paulo are currently also collaborating on a research project: “Making Autonomous Sustainable Trade Regulations Work for Everyone” project, coordinated by Cédric Dupont, Professor of International Relations/Political Science at the Geneva Graduate Institute, and Joost Pauwelyn, Professor of International Law at the Institute, in partnership with Rodrigo Fagundes Cezar, Assistant Professor at the School of International Relations at Fundação Getulio Vargas (FGV), in São Paulo, Brazil. Rodrigo Fagundes Cezar holds a PhD in International Relations/Political Science from the Geneva Graduate Institute.
