New Faculty Members

Outstanding permanent and visiting faculty members will join the Institute this spring semester.

The spring term begins on 18 February, and like each semester several accomplished teachers and researchers will come to the Institute as new faculty members or in visiting positions.

The Anthropology and Sociology of Development Department will be welcoming several new faculty members:

Martin Riesebrodt as Adjunct Professor and Yves Oltramare Chair on "Religion and Politics in the Contemporary World". Martin Riesebrodt is Professor Emeritus at the University of Chicago's Divinity School and Department of Sociology. Previously, he was John F. Kennedy Fellow at Harvard and worked at the Max Weber Archives. He is the author of several books on religion. Professor Riesebrodt will be giving a public lecture entitled "Religion and Politics in the Modern World" on 28 February.

Aditya Bharadwaj as Research Professor. In this role, as a medical anthropologist/sociologist, he will carry out research on the emergence of stem cell biotechnologies in India. For the project, he was awarded a prestigious European Research Council (ERC) Consolidator Grant. Professor Bharadwaj comes to the Institute from the University of Edinburgh where he taught and carried out research for seven years.

Vinh-Kim Nguyen as Visiting Professor. From the University of Montreal, he is a well-known medical anthropologist and practicing HIV and emergency physician. He will be teaching a course entitled "Issues in Social Theory".

Eva Hartmann as Visiting Lecturer. She comes to the Institute from the University of Lausanne.

New faculty members in other departments and programmes are:

Yi Huang, formerly an Economist at the International Monetary Fund, has been appointed Assistant Professor in the International Economics Department and Pictet Chair in Finance and Development affiliated to the recently created Centre for Finance and Development.

Jakob Kellenberger, immediate past President of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), will be Visiting Professor and teach a course entitled "Humanitarian Action, Framework and Practice" for the interdisciplinary master programmes in international affairs and development studies.

Jan Klabbers, an accomplished scholar from the University of Helsinki, will be Visiting Professor in the International Law department.

Julio Pinto Vallejos, Professor at Universidad Santiago de Chile and specialist of Latin America, will be the spring semester’s Pierre du Bois Foundation for Current History Visiting Professor in the International History Department.

Claire Somerville will be a Visiting Lecturer in the Interdisciplinary Programmes.
