New participatory seminar: Global Health Governance: What Role for Non-State Actors?

The Global Health Programme organises a participatory seminar for government representatives only to proceed under the Chatham House Rule from 28 to 30 November in Geneva. Global Health Diplomacy is evolving rapidly, not only as a key cross-cutting strategic component to international relations, but perhaps most impressively by the magnitude of relevant non-state actors involved in global health. A range of stakeholders at varying interdependent stages and levels of the negotiation processes play influential and determining roles – but there is a lack of clarity as to their legitimate involvement in developing global norms and standards. This applies particularly to the private sector.

Specifically designed for governmental representatives, this seminar seeks to explain how the many stakeholders interact and manage their ‘responsibilities’ at various stages of the negotiation processes; how they balance requirements, expectations and accountability. The seminar will be held on two consecutive evenings and one full Saturday and will benefit participants by combining theory and practice through guest lectures, negotiation exercises and simulation.

This participatory seminar is open to government representatives only. It is specifically addressed to health attachés, diplomats in charge of health portfolios working in multilateral environments, as well as health and international relations professionals in departments of international health in ministries of health, foreign affairs and development cooperation.
