New study programmes

The Institute adds a master and PhDs in innovative disciplines in the field of development.

Beginning this autumn semester the Graduate Institute now offers a master and PhD in Anthropology and Sociology of Development as well as a PhD in Development Economics.

The Institute has also introduced two other important features to its study programmes this year. Now students can pursue a minor in any of the PhD programmes. Those who wish to carry out a master and PhD can take advantage of the recently created fast track that allows students to pursue the two degrees in five years instead of six.

“Our Anthropology and Sociology of Development department’s programmes are ideal for students interested in non-state actors and social movements, in conflict and power, in transnationalism and migration, in post-colonial theory, in identity – to name but a few themes”, said the interim Head of the department, Professor Isabelle Schulte-Tenckhoff. The two programmes focus on the comparative study of global issues from below, from the margins, and across borders and explore development in a critical and forward-looking manner as pertaining to all regions in the world including the Global South.

“The PhD programme in Development Economics is extremely selective; we admit a low number of students in order to provide better supervision and make it easier to secure funding for them. In addition, the Institute if one of very few places in the world that currently offers a PhD in Development Economics”, said Jean Louis Arcand, Institute Professor and Head of the new Development Economics Programme. The PhD in Development Economics provides state-of-the-art training in macro, micro and econometrics. It also encourages students to take a minor, at the PhD level, in another discipline, so as to be equipped to deal with complex issues from at least two academic standpoints. In addition, students have the opportunity of carrying out fieldwork in the context of projects being supervised by faculty members in developing countries.
