Non-Proliferation and Disarmament Trends in the Middle East

The Geneva Graduate Institute, in partnership with the UN Institute for Disarmament Research (UNIDIR) and co-sponsored by the Global Governance Centre, hosted a forum on the pursuit of a Middle East Weapons of Mass Destruction Free Zone, drawing diplomats, researchers, and policy experts from around the world.

The event opened with the release of UNIDIR's latest research on non-proliferation trends in the region, setting the stage for a wide-ranging panel discussion featuring Ambassador Stephan Klement (EU Special Envoy for Non-proliferation and Disarmament), Dr. Robin Geiss (Director, UNIDIR), Mr. Mohamed Gamal Ahmed ElGhitany (Permanent Mission of Egypt to the UN in Geneva), Dr. Grégoire Mallard (Geneva Graduate Institute), and Dr. Abdolrasool Divsallar (UNIDIR), moderated by Dr. Chen Zak Kane (UNIDIR).

Conversations ranged well beyond technical non-proliferation questions, touching on the shifting geopolitical landscape of the Middle East, the enduring role of nuclear weapon-free zones as frameworks for regional cooperation, and the ways emerging technologies like AI are reshaping traditional notions of security. Speakers wove together historical perspective and forward-looking analysis, reflecting on how decades of diplomatic effort intersect with today's more volatile regional dynamics.

What emerged was less a single roadmap than a candid exploration of competing pressures as the immediate realities of an unsettled region. Participants agreed that while no easy answers exist, sustained dialogue between institutions like UNIDIR and the Global Governance Centre remains essential to keeping the goal of a WMD-free Middle East within reach.
