From old papers to new data. Some experiments from the data for financial history project

Geneva, 10 October 2025 — The Centre for Digital Humanities and Multilateralism (CDHM) hosted a seminar titled “From Old Papers to New Data. Some Experiments from the Data for Financial History Project”, bringing together economists, historians and digital humanities specialists to explore the challenges and opportunities of converting archival financial records into large-scale digital datasets.

Organised by the Centre for Digital Humanities & Multilateralism, the event featured presentations by contributors to the Data for Financial History (DFIH) initiative, Pierre-Cyrille Hautcoeur and Angelo Riva. Then François Chahuneau and Thierry Puissegur-Ripet, shared their expertise on digital capture and data extraction.

Discussions focused on the methodological and technical challenges of converting fragile archives into reliable, structured data, and on the potential for these resources to deepen understanding of financial systems across time.

This seminar was part of the “Kitchen Series” of Friday seminars hosted by the CDHM, intended to foster collaborative exchange among scholars working on digitisation and archival research. It highlighted the power of interdisciplinary collaboration to bridge history, economics, and technology — turning old papers into new insights.
