Project Summary:

This project examines the process of decolonisation and transfer of power in the context of India’s Princely States. Long neglected as politically peripheral tin-pot autocracies, scholars are increasingly recovering these Princely States as important sites of imperial politics and important components of the imperial polity. ‘Raja and Praja’ builds on this turn in South Asian historiography to focus on public politics in the Princely States, and the role of political associations in the States in the negotiated dissolution of the princely order – as well as the wider process of decolonisation.
