How do we ensure national security concerns are addressed with respect for international law, including the right to privacy, freedom of expression and the sovereign equality of States? These were topics discussed by guest panelists Ambassador Thomas Fitschen, Deputy Permanent Representative of Germany to the Office of the United Nations and other International Organisations in Geneva, and Madame Maria Luisa Escorel de Moraes, Ministre-Conseiller at the respective Permanent Mission of Brazil. The panel explored how this issue of extra-territorial surveillance, prevalent in recent global media, is seen through the lens of international law. In attendance were members of the Missions in Geneva, legal professionals from International Organisations, NGOs and private companies, and young professional lawyers wishing to pursue a career in international law.
