A Policy Hackathon on International Trade and Food Security

This competition is your chance to dream big on practical solutions to pressing global problems and present your vision at the highest level during the week of the WTO Public Forum for a chance at a cash prize of up to 2,000 Swiss Francs*.

The Policy Hackathon on International Trade and Food Security is an exciting competition that invites you to contribute your ideas on some of the most topical issues in global policy today. Team up with up to three other Masters or PhD students and spend an intense three days envisioning, designing and articulating a policy proposal for consideration by an esteemed panel of leading international experts and policymakers. 

At a time when the international trading system is dominating headlines, and food security is a top priority for citizens, leaders and international organizations, lend your creativity and innovation to the cause of bold new solutions rooted in collaboration and cooperation.

How to apply

 

  • You'll need a team of 2 to 4, with all participants enrolled in a Masters, PhD or Post-Doctorate program at the time you apply. Applications close on 1 July (15:59 CEST). 

     

  • Once the challenge question is announced, you and your team will work together to create a policy pitch, its content and a short video detailing your thought process and proposed solution. 

     

  • The Hackathon will take place from Friday 29 Aug (09:00 CEST) to Sunday 1 Sept (09:00 CEST). Participation is entirely virtual, and open to eligible post-graduate students from anywhere in the world. 

     

  • The three finalists will be invited to present their projects virtually to the jury at an event during the WTO Public Forum week (15-19 Sept), where the winner and two runner ups will be decided.

Guidelines, judging and selection criteria

Submissions will consist of three elements:

 

  • Section 1: a narrative section explaining the element of the problem the submission is hoping to address, and how the solution is intended to address it (1,000 words max.);

     

  • Section 2: a substantive section, outlining how the proposed solution would appear in a Ministerial Declaration, General Council Decision, treaty change etc (500 words max.);

     

  • Section 3: a video explaining the proposal and how it would work (3 minutes max.)

     

The guidelines provide all the description of the theme, eligibility criteria and evaluation criteria and other hackathon related information.

All participating teams will be briefed by the WTO Secretariat and GTP through the Beyong Trade Network.
