Prof. Zachary Douglas Appointed Queen’s Counsel

Zachary Douglas, Associate Professor in International Law at the Institute and one of the world’s leading specialists in public international law and arbitration, has been appointed as a Queen’s Counsel in the United Kingdom.

This prestigious title, known as “taking silk”, dates back to the Middle Ages. Queen’s Counsel are appointed by the British monarch on the advice of the British Government following a rigorous selection process in which the candidate’s experience and competencies as an advocate are tested.

Only around 100 legal professionals, primarily barristers, receive the title each year in the UK. Professor Douglas has been appointed Queen’s Counsel in recognition of his outstanding advocacy in public international cases before international courts and tribunals as well as the English courts.

Previously at the University of Cambridge, Zachary Douglas joined the Graduate Institute in 2011 and specialises in international arbitration, territorial disputes, human rights and corporate responsibility. He is also a member of Matrix Chambers in London.

Professor Douglas was sworn in by the UK’s Lord Chancellor at a ceremony held at Westminster Palace, London, on Monday 16 February. He is believed to be the first Queen’s Counsel ever to be based in Switzerland.
