The pursuit of reproductive agency in a changing world

UNFPA launches its State of World Population Report 2025

The UNFPA State of World Population 2025 Report was released on 10 June 2025. The launch event in Geneva was organised on 11 June by the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) at the Geneva Graduate Institute. The event was co-hosted by the Albert Hirschman Centre on Democracy, the Gender Centre and the Department of Anthropology and Sociology.

Entitled “The Real Fertility Crisis: The pursuit of reproductive agency in a changing world”, the report explores the causes and consequences of fertility trends, and points to the fact that many people cannot freely decide if, when, and with whom they want children.

The event in Geneva explored several key questions: How to pursue reproductive agency in high and low fertility countries? How do gender relations influence decisions about how many children to have? What role do demographic dynamics and discourses play in democratic politics around the world today?

After opening remarks by AHCD Executive Director Christine Lutringer, the first part of the discussion started with a presentation of the report by Shalini Randeria, Rector of Central European University, who acted as Senior external advisor on the report.

Then, during a debate moderated by Pernille Fenger, Director of the UNFPA Geneva Representation Office, the Permanent Representatives of Spain, Somalia, and Sweden discussed the problems and challenges their respective countries are facing, and how they can be addressed at national and international levels.
