As Professor Randeria takes up her role as rector of the IWM, a new programme of collaboration between the two institutes is launched with the support of SERI.

Shalini Randeria, Professor of Anthropology and Sociology at the Graduate Institute, Geneva, has been appointed Rector of the Institute for Human Sciences (Institut für die Wissenschaften vom Menschen, IWM) in Vienna. Professor Randeria, who took office at the IWM in January 2015, continues to be a Professor at the Institute and is also its Director of Research.

The IWM is an institute of advanced study founded in 1982 and is a member of the network of European institutes of advanced study, which are based on the model of the Princeton Institute for Advanced Study. Hosting fifty researchers in the humanities and social sciences each year, the IWM aims to foster intellectual exchange between East and West, between science and society, and between diverse disciplines and schools of thought, as well as addressing key challenges facing policymakers and a plurality of publics.

Given the similarities of profiles and complementary of thematic areas, collaboration between the IWM and the Institute is timely. The Swiss State Secretariat for Education, Research and Innovation (SERI) will support this collaboration with CHF 170,000 in 2015–2016. This will allow PhD students and young doctoral graduates from the Institute to spend time at the IWM as junior visiting fellows, as well as the organisation of conferences and public lectures in both Geneva and Vienna.

Call for applications for Junior Visiting Fellowships at the IWM.
