As part of Democracy Week 2025, the Geneva Graduate Institute is hosting an interactive installation developed by EPFL: the Deepfake Booth.
Set up in the main entrance hall of Pétale 1 (to the right), this immersive experience invites visitors to explore how easily images and videos can be manipulated — and to reflect on the implications for democracy, media, and trust.
What Is the Deepfake Booth?
Developed by researchers at EPFL, the Deepfake Booth functions much like a photobooth. In just a few minutes, participants sit in front of a camera, take a single picture, and watch as artificial intelligence transforms it in real time. Their face suddenly appears in a short video, replacing the characters on screen through a process called face-swapping.
This surprising and sometimes unsettling experience illustrates the sophistication and accessibility of deepfake technology — and highlights the importance of media literacy and critical thinking in the digital age.
